Consider the Diaconate
The following article was run in the May 14, 2004, edition of the Catholic Star Herald, newspaper of the Diocese of Camden.
The Sacred Order of Deacons has its origin in apostolic times. As Christian communities grew in size, the apostles found it necessary to have assistance in serving at the Eucharistic meals. Acts 6:2 records that the apostles asked the community to suggest men of good character who could assist them. Seven men were selected and after they were tested, the apostles prayed over them and, by laying on of hands, appointed the men the first deacons. These deacons had the responsibility to assist at the Eucharistic celebrations, preach and teach the word and administer the Eucharist to the sick and shut-ins at their homes.
From its origins, the diaconate has been a ministry of service and thereby emulates Jesus, who said of himself, “the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve” (Matt. 20:28). For more than 700 years, the diaconate ministry flourished in the Church. After the Second Vatican Council, Pope Paul VI restored the diaconate to a permanent ministry. At the present time there are more than 14,000 deacons in the United States. In the Diocese of Camden, 116 deacons serve in 62 parishes and 51 men are preparing for ordination through the diaconal formation program.
The diaconate ministry is a real blessing and a rewarding experience. Deacons are ordained for the ministry of the word, ministry of the liturgy, and ministry of service. In addition to performing their liturgical role, deacons minister to youth, the elderly, the sick, those in prison, and all people in need.
We are actively seeking Catholic men (both single and married) for the diaconate ministry. Inquirers must be at least 31 years of age, love their Church, and enjoy serving. At the present time, our formation program includes 1 year of aspirancy and 3 years of candidacy. All classes are held on Saturdays from mid-September through mid-June. Sessions run from 9 AM to 3 PM and are held in the Diaconate Center in Paulsboro, NJ.
